Our clients at the University of Birmingham kindly invited GRIN to an open event with special guest speaker, Jay Rayner, the renowned journalist, writer, broadcaster and food critic best known for his Observer food column. Myself and GRIN’s resident red-head Emma Davies went along to the lunchtime event to not only hear about Jay’s experience as a food critic but to also sample food from the Universities award-winning catering team.
The event took place at the University’s most prestigious venue, The Great Hall which is housed in the late Victorian red-brick building, The Aston Webb. We entered The Great Hall through an opulent marble foyer, where we were given goody bags before we enjoyed a variety of lunchtime treats.
Jay’s talk focused on his experience as a food critic, his bugbears of restaurant waiting staff and why Birmingham is making a name for itself with it’s offering of culinary delights. Although some of his comments about Birmingham were questionable, we thoroughly enjoyed the event and enjoyed listening to Jay’s experiences of dealing with bad reviews and restaurants attempting to give him special treatment.
